Transmission Repair Specialist
Doctor J automotive excels at automatic and manual transmission repair. We also realize that proper diagnosis of the transmission problem is the first crucial step in fixing the problem. Minor issues properly diagnosed early can be the difference between a transmission tune-up and a transmission overhaul.
If you are having any of the following symptoms, have your car diagnosed immediately by a professional.
- Check engine light is on or the onboard diagnostics (OBD II) is on
- Fluid leaks are appearing
- Transmission will not engage or there is a delayed engagement
- Harsh engagement or harsh up and down shifting
- Transmission is slipping
- Whining noises or grinding noises
Doctor J Automotive Transmission Tips
Watch for leaks or stains under the car.
If a red oil leak is coming from your car, have a professional check to see where it is coming from. This could be a transmission leak or a power steering leak (see our steering section). Both deserve your immediate attention. Allowing a transmission leak to go unchecked can lead to serious transmission damage if fluids drop below the minimum levels. Treating problems early will save you time and money in the future.
Check fluid for color and odor.
Checking the fluid levels maybe advanced for most, but this can be a good preventative measure. See your cars maintenance manual for the proper way to check the fluid levels. It is much like checking your oil. Pull the transmission dipstick out and check the fluid for color and odor. The transmission fluid is transparent red oil that looks much like cherry cough syrup. If the fluid is cloudy or muddy, or it has a burned odor, you should have a professional mechanic diagnosis what maybe the problem.
New noises, vibrations and shift behavior.
If you are experiencing erratic or harsh shift behavior or new whining or grinding noises, have your transmission checked out immediately. A modern transmission should shift smoothly and quietly under light acceleration. Heavier acceleration should produce firmer shifts at higher speeds.

Doctor J Automotive Clutch Tips
Don’t ride your clutch
We know you have heard the term and if you have a manual transmission, you maybe guilty. Keeping your foot of the clutch pedal instead of the floorboard can cause premature wear to your clutch. The pressure, ever so slight, maybe enough to cause the clutch to not be fully engaged. The slipping that occurs then can cause premature bearing failure. Practice good shifting habits and maximize the life of your clutch and transmission parts.
